Why Gothic Churches Lift the Soul (2026)

Sermon of Father John A. Perricone preached on Thursday, June 25th, 2026 during a private Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City, New York. Father reflects on the spiritual meaning of Gothic architecture, showing how its beauty, mysticism, and militant character awaken the Catholic soul to seek the face of Christ and boldly bring His truth to the world.

Why Gothic Churches Lift the Soul

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

I know what you're thinking, why is Father having a second anniversary Mass? And that is because Saint Vincent Ferrer is absolutely irresistible. Of all the Gothic cathedrals in Europe, which are unsurpassed in their beauty, it is Saint Vincent Ferrer that stands as one of the finest examples of classical Gothic architecture in all of North America. No wonder it is irresistible, and especially to priests.

And then of course, there is the majesty and the transporting beauty of Saint Vincent Ferrer. Of course, we all know that the Romanesque and the Baroque bespeak the grandeur of God, as much as the Gothic cathedral in church does. But there is something that the Gothic possesses that they do not. And that is the evocation of mysticism. The soaring ceiling, vaulted ceilings, and the stained glass and the bareness of the walls. We as Catholics, we are left panting to see the face of God.

But moreover, Saint Vincent Ferrer, as every Gothic church, bespeaks the triumph of our holy Catholic faith. It bespeaks the militancy that goes marching forth, which is a part of our Catholic hearts. Every Gothic church is like a call to arms.

No one best expressed that than G.K. Chesterton. When he wrote, "The truth about Gothic is first, that it is alive. And secondly, that it is on the march." It is the church militant. It is the only fighting architecture. All its spires are spears at rest, and all its stones are stones asleep in a catapult.

And these are the reasons why every Gothic church captures the hearts of every Catholic priest and every baptized Catholic. Because it is in its soul rousing, it’s to priests and laymen, this burning desire to touch the beautiful face of God. It is that consuming fire in each and every Catholic heart, that wants to march forward out of its doors and into the world and bring all men into the arms of the one true church, the church that God founded, the only way to heaven.

All of you remember in Dostoyevsky’s novel, The Idiot. He writes, "The world will only be saved by beauty." He was half right. The world will be saved solely by the beauty of Christ, our savior. And he will not save that world without us.

God bless you.
